Jukkasjärvi, Sweden
Icehotel
Every winter the Torne River freezes, and every winter a hotel is cut from it. Icehotel sits in Jukkasjärvi, a village north of the Arctic Circle near Kiruna. Its seasonal building is designed anew each year and melts back into the river in spring.
Artists apply to design its suites, so no two seasons look the same. Beds are ice topped with reindeer hides and thermal sleeping bags. A permanent section, Icehotel 365, keeps ice rooms cold all year. Warm rooms sit alongside for the nights you would rather not spend at minus five.
